Name the River and the Night for a Christmas Ships Stay

The Christmas Ships Parade runs fifteen nights in December 2026. Eight of those nights split the fleet, with one group of boats on the Columbia and another on the Willamette. A room request that names the river and the night can be answered.

The river is the booking decision

The Columbia fleet assembles at the M. James Gleason Boat Ramp on NE Marine Drive at 43rd. The Willamette fleet assembles at Riverplace Marina on the downtown side. On a split night both leave at 7:00 p.m. The two fleets are in different parts of the city at the same time, so the night fixes which river a window can see.

The eight split nights and where each fleet goes

Mon. Dec. 7 — Columbia to Washington Shores and Wintler Park. Willamette upriver past the Old Spaghetti Factory to Johns Landing, then downriver under the Fremont Bridge.

Tue. Dec. 8 — Columbia to the I-205 Bridge and Steamboat Landing, then toward SE 164th on the Washington side. Willamette to Milwaukie.

Wed. Dec. 9 — Columbia to North Portland Harbor. Willamette to Johns Landing and the Fremont Bridge.

Fri. Dec. 11 — Columbia to the Vancouver waterfront and Hayden Bay. Willamette to Milwaukie and the Oregon Yacht Club.

Tue. Dec. 15 — Columbia to North Portland Harbor. Willamette to Milwaukie.

Wed. Dec. 16 — Columbia to the Vancouver waterfront and Hayden Bay. Willamette to Johns Landing and the Fremont Bridge.

Thu. Dec. 17 — Columbia to the I-205 Bridge and Steamboat Landing. Willamette to Milwaukie.

Fri. Dec. 18 — Columbia to Washington Shores and Wintler Park. Willamette to Johns Landing and the Fremont Bridge.

What a Willamette night puts outside the window

The Willamette routes hold the downtown shoreline. The organiser lists the Riverplace Esplanade at the west end of the Marquam Bridge, Tom McCall Waterfront Park from Clay to Glisan, and the South Waterfront Greenway as outdoor viewing locations for the Johns Landing nights. All three sit on the west bank inside the downtown hotel grid. On Dec. 7, 9, 16 and 18 that shoreline is the purchase.

What a Columbia night asks of the room

The Columbia fleet works the river's north and east reaches: Wintler Park, North Portland Harbor, the I-205 crossing, the Vancouver waterfront. No downtown building stands over that water. A Columbia night means a drive to NE Marine Drive or a room on the Washington side.

The combined nights move the answer back downtown

Seven December nights run the fleets together. Dec. 3 and Dec. 4 leave from the Gleason ramp between 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. Dec. 5 works Camas, Washougal and Steamboat Landing Park from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 12 leaves the St. Helens public dock from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Dec. 13 runs from JJ Collins Memorial Park between 4:30 and 9:00 p.m. Dec. 19 and Dec. 20 both launch from Riverplace Marina, at 4:30 p.m. to Lake Oswego and at 5:00 p.m. to the St. Johns Bridge and Cathedral Park. The season opens on Nov. 27 with a one-hour Santa escort to the Vancouver waterfront for the Rotary tree lighting.

A two-night stay that covers two parades

Dec. 18 is a split night with the Willamette fleet leaving Riverplace Marina at 7:00 p.m. Dec. 19 is a combined night leaving the same marina at 4:30 p.m. One room booked for both nights looks at that water twice, from one address. Write the request as three facts: arriving Dec. 18, departing Dec. 20, river-facing room. The hotel can confirm or decline that.

The organiser's warning on lead time

The parade's own FAQ sells no rooms and still sets the clock. “Many local restaurants and hotels take reservations to view the Christmas Ships. But plan ahead! Many book out months in advance and some will completely sell out prior to Parade season.” That sentence is the organiser's. It puts the booking window at months, and it bites hardest on the split nights, because those are the nights a river-facing request covers the fewest rooms.

Weather, debris and the night that can be cancelled

Severe weather is the one condition the organiser names as a cancellation trigger, and the decision is made close to parade time. Debris in the river cancelled both parades on Dec. 19, 2025, and the site still carries that notice. Bridge lifts and commercial river traffic move the clock, which is why the organiser states that exact arrival times at a viewing spot cannot be given. Book a room worth keeping for the city itself. A cancellation then costs a dinner.

What the parade itself costs

Nothing. The parade is free to watch, needs no ticket, and is run by a volunteer 501(c)(3) that has paraded since 1954. This is the 72nd season, and the organiser describes it as the longest continuously operating illuminated boat parade in the United States. Around 80 boats take part, from 14 to 65 feet. The parade is a designated Oregon Heritage Tradition, one of thirty in the state. The room is the only line item.
