One night covers the build for most teams

Leap's Sandcastle Classic returns to Ocean Beach for its 44th year on Saturday, October 24, 2026. The organiser places the site at Ocean Beach at Balboa Street. Its team guide names the corner as Great Highway and Balboa Street. The 2026 theme is "Bay Area Vibes".

Admission is free and the public drops in without registering. The organiser caps the field at 30 teams this year. Leap's home page counts more than 5,000 people at Ocean Beach each year, and the team guide prints over 4,000. The 2026 fundraising goal is $300,000.

The clock sets the room nights. Teams check in between 8:00 and 10:00 a.m., the build opens at 11:00 a.m. and the event ends at 3:30 p.m. Those hours leave most travelling teams on one night, Friday, October 23.

The morning assignments fix the arrival day

The team guide's build rules put Leap staff and volunteers on the beach at 8:00 a.m. to rope off the sites. Teams check in inside that window and take an assigned plot. Raking and levelling run from 10:00 a.m., with the staging area and signage going up at the same time. Digging stays closed until the 11:00 a.m. foghorn.

Students arrive between 10:00 and 10:30 a.m. Each team's waterguards meet at the Registration Tent at about 10:45 a.m. for the rip-tide briefing. Each team's Green Monster attends a 10:30 a.m. meeting for the trash and recycling brief.

A team that lands at San Francisco International on Saturday morning meets an 8:00 a.m. check-in window. A Friday arrival puts the team on the sand for its first briefing.

The role list gives the room count

The team structure sets the size of the travelling party. The guide asks for three to five company partners, ideally including a general contractor, an architecture or design firm and an engineering firm, with one partner school classroom. Registration costs $500 per team and counts toward a $5,000 fundraising minimum.

Each team designates three day-of logistics leads, three to four build leads, two waterguards and one Green Monster. Set-up duty and break-down duty sit with two to three people per partner company. A three-company team carries six to nine set-up people, eight to nine build, waterguard and logistics people, and one Green Monster: 15 people or more on the sand before the foghorn sounds.

Where the build day ends

Building stops at 2:30 p.m. Judges tour the sites from 12:15 p.m. and take a final pass at 1:30 p.m. The award ceremony follows. The organiser's main-event schedule lists the ceremony for 3:15 p.m.; the build-rules page of the team guide lists 3:00 p.m. Both documents end the event at 3:30 p.m.

Break-down follows the ceremony, and every team loads out its own site. A team that prefers a load-out after a night of rest adds Saturday night and checks out Sunday. Most firms hold the stay to Friday night.

The beach corridor in our own directory

Our directory filters by postal code, the field that separates beach frontage from the rest of the city. Five properties sit inside the three ZIPs that hold the Ocean Beach corridor: 94121 at Balboa Street, 94122 to the south and 94116 inland.

Seal Rock Inn sits at 545 Point Lobos Avenue, 94121, and publishes no star rating. Motel 6 sits at 1234 Great Highway, 94122, with two stars. SeaScape Inn, a FairBridge Hotel, sits at 4340 Judah Street, 94122, with two stars. Ocean Inn sits at 4211 Judah Street, 94122, with two stars. Mirage Inn & Suites sits at 2600 Sloat Boulevard, 94116, with two stars.

Driving distance from Balboa Street at Great Highway, read on October 14, 2026: 1.1 miles to Seal Rock Inn, 1.2 miles to Motel 6, 1.2 miles to SeaScape Inn, 1.2 miles to Ocean Inn and 3.1 miles to Mirage Inn & Suites. None of the five directory cards carries a nightly rate.

The Lombard Street row adds inventory inland

ZIP 94123 holds 30 directory records, 25 of them with a Lombard Street address, about 6.0 miles by road from the Balboa Street junction. Star ratings on the rated cards run from two to four, and four cards carry none. The four-star card is the Infinity Hotel San Francisco, a Tapestry Collection by Hilton, at 2322 Lombard Street.

What the organiser publishes and what it leaves to the property

Leap publishes no room block, no group code, no nightly rate and no parking page for beach day. A count across its home, event, schedule, FAQ, participation, press, team resources, sponsors and judges pages returns no hit for room block, group code, lodging, accommodation or where to stay. The organiser answers logistics at sandcastle@leaparts.org and (415) 512-1899. The site map on the team resources page carries the 2025 edition, so ask for the October 24 layout before planning a load-in.

Put four questions to every property: the nightly rate for Friday, October 23; the last date to cancel without a fee; the number of rooms the property holds under one name; and whether the rate holds when the stay grows to Saturday night.

One request reaches both corridors

hotelhuddle sends one free request for proposal to 50 or more hotels in a destination city. Properties answer within 24 to 72 hours. The group pays the hotel directly, and hotelhuddle adds no markup to the rate. Most hotels quote group rates from 10 rooms per night, and some discount from five rooms. The site reports group rates 15 to 40 percent below rack.

The three to five companies on one team can put their room list into a single request and compare the beach corridor with the Lombard Street row in one dashboard. Aim the request at the people on the 8:00 a.m. clock: set-up leads, build leads, waterguards and the logistics leads.
